The Origin
Troy Beauregard came into this world as a premature baby, a kid who, by the medical standards of the time, wasn't given much of a shot at a normal life. But in 1986, a young Troy sat down and watched Rocky IV. He saw Ivan Drago being built in a lab, a machine engineered by science to be the perfect athlete. And something clicked.
That moment planted a seed that never stopped growing: the idea that science could give humans the tools to do truly extraordinary things. From that day forward, Troy dedicated his life to understanding exactly how.
Nearly 30 years later, he built the lab himself. Not in a Hollywood movie, but right here in Greater Sudbury, Northern Ontario.
The Career
Over 25 years of coaching have taken Troy from everyday champions taking their first steps in the gym, all the way to the highest levels of professional sport. He has worked with Stanley Cup, Calder Cup, National, and Provincial champions across multiple sports. But he'll tell you that some of his proudest moments have come from watching a first-timer look up mid-session and say, "Oh shoot, coach, time's up already?"
In October 2024, Troy was named Director of Sports Science for the Sudbury Five of the Basketball Super League. That season, the Five won the championship and for the first time in his career, Troy didn't just coach an athlete to a title. He held the ring himself, as a member of the team.
He also hosts the Athletes Upgraded podcast, where he breaks down elite sports performance, and has been a guest on numerous podcasts discussing training, sports science, and athlete development.
The Mission
A few years ago, Troy visited the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor near Austin, Texas, a Division III school with facilities that would rival many professional organizations. With Texas A&M and other elite programs nearby, he stood there and thought about the athletes back home in Northern Ontario. Kids with just as much talent, but without the tools to prove it.
That was the moment VO2Peak became inevitable. Troy came home and built the lab. Not because it was easy, but because Northern Ontario's athletes deserved a place to compete on equal footing with anyone in the world. A place with real science, real data, and a coach who has seen what elite looks like from the inside.
As Northern Ontario's only Universal Speed Rating Speed Lab, VO2Peak now gives every athlete, from AAA hockey players to weekend warriors, a nationally comparable score that tells them exactly where they stand. No guesswork. No disadvantage. Just data.

"We're here because of the community. I wouldn't have opened this facility if I didn't believe that the people of Sudbury deserved a true sports science lab, with the tools, the knowledge, and the network to compete with anyone in the world."
